How does a BMX race start
When you first come out to the BMX track everything is new, but the one thing that is most likely to have not been tried before is the starting gate.
One of our local riders (while in college) E.J. has put a video together to explain how to get a good gate start. This may seem a little much if you’ve never been out, but it just takes a few tries to get the basics down. Everyone that is at the track started with a foot down before they learned to balance.
New to BMX
You don’t need an expensive bike to get started in BMX Racing. Most any kids 20 inch wheeled bike will work, once pegs, reflectors, kickstands have been removed and brakes added (mostly teenagers).
Walmart has had some BMX racing bikes in the last couple of years. Last year they sold the Donny Robinson Signature Hyper. This year Walmart is carrying DK bikes. DK has been around for years in BMX. They have a bike for smaller kids and one for bigger kids. These are new and I have only seen these bikes in the stores, but they look like a great starting point.
There are also local bicycle shops in and around San Antonio that carry BMX Racing specific bikes. Action Bikes has been carrying BMX Racing bicycles for years and has in the past had a National level BMX racing team. Other bike shops that also carry BMX Racing bikes include Cycle Logic and Bike World. Britton’s Bicycles, Planet Bike and Ride-a-Way Bikes maybe able to assist you also, I just don’t have the same level of experience with these local stores.
Kids grow quickly and outgrow their bikes so there is a steady stream of used bikes. These get snapped up quickly from local riders, but can also be found on eBay and other sites.
Best way to get more information about getting started is to come out the track, ask around, most won’t bite and those that do have had all their shots.
